American beauty, Farrah Fawcett is an icon of the Seventies. Farrah’s road to celebrity is a classic example. Born in Texas, she starts with beauty contests followed by the obvious modelling and then won some small roles on television.
Thus she marries one of the Seventies major figures, the man who was worth (at least on screen) three billion, Lee Majors. Farrah first became famous under the Fawcett-Majors name. In 1976, she accepted the role of Jill Munroe, the most emblematic of Charlie’s angels.’ All the angels have heavily blow-dried 70’s hair styles but Farrah’s blond mane is particularly spectacular. Her hair style was copied by millions of women around the world and became know simply as “The Farrah”.
It was during this time that her photo in a red swimsuit which will adorn countless teenagers rooms, (20 millions poster were sold !) is an image where she appears with her very famous big smile, a novelty at the time.
She quickly abandoned Charlie & his angels but yet remains eternally associated with a show that is going to experience the same success long after her departure. She managed some incursions in the movies but her furiously Seventies look does not allow her to join the Hollywood firmament.
However her undisputed sex symbol status and her long chaotic romance with Ryan O’Neal, one of the superstars of the time, made her an icon in the hearts of the public who even forgives her sometimes quite spectacular blunders.
It was in 2009, as a young looking 62 years old, that she finally left this world leaving behind the image of a certain kind of woman, the kind that can declare with aplomb : “Sweat is sexy “. AM x
