A brief history of M.A.C

M.A.C stands for Make-up Art Cosmetics and was founded in 1984 by two Canadians both named Frank – beauty salon owner Frank Angelo and make-up artist/photographer Frank Toskan. They were frustrated by the lack of makeup colour which would photographed well under photographic lights and they started making their makeup in their kitchen. It was sold it through their beauty salon. It was originally created for professionals but soon gained such a popularity through world of mouth that it was launched in a Canadian department store for the general public.

In 1995, Estée Lauder Companies purchased 51% of the company. In 1998 after the death of one of the founding Franks 1998, they bought the remaining share. Estée Lauder is a huge global beauty company and helped M.A.C to expand much further and now there is a 1500 locations selling the brand in 78 different countries worldwide.

WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT ?

M.A.C stores employ makeup artists as sales assistants and nurtures their relationship with working makeup artists. M.A.C’s motto is ‘All ages. All races. All sexes’ and their make-up is designed to be accessible for all. They were the first brand who had foundations, concealers and powders to match a large range of different skin tones.

Their package is black, chic yet utilitarian. But their very large colour, particularly for different skin tones range gives M.A.C an edgy feel attractive to a younger crowd.
