A brief history of Clinique x

HOW DID CLINIQUE START ?

Clinique’s story began with a conversation in 1967 between US Vogue Magazine editor Carol Phillips and Dr. Norman Orentreich, the high-profile New York dermatologist. Carol Phillips was interviewing Dr Orentriech and he expressed a simple idea that would transform the beauty industry.
At the time the general attitude towards skin care was mainly down to lucky genes Clinique’s big idea was that a skincare routine could result great skin.

So, with the help of Evelyn Lauder (daughter-in-law of Estée), Carol Phillips and dermatologist Norman Orentreich MD worked together to develop a brand that brought dermatological thinking to cosmetics. The now world-famous 3-Step Skin Care System – a daily cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising routine was born.

Clinique big plus was adding a daily exfoliation to the cleaning routine. Clinique offers a whole range of gentle exfoliators depending on your skin type, from very dry to very oily. As for moisturiser, the Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturising Lotion (£17.00 for 50ml) is easily their best-seller, with one selling somewhere in the world every 3.7 seconds. Just one year later Clinique opened its first counter in the UK.

It was the first ever dermatologist-created, allergy-tested, 100% fragrance-free collection of beauty products ever marketed. It is now one of the biggest skin care and cosmetics brands on the market, with stores in 135 different countries. And it is a big part in the giant Estée Lauder beauty empire.

In 1976 Clinique was also the first prestige cosmetics company to recognise the different skin care needs of men and to provide them with a practical, approachable line of skin care – Skin Supplies for Men.

It is important to mention that over 25 years ago Clinique were the first cosmetic company to offer a great range of foundations. At the time most foundations had pink undertones, Clinique offered foundations with more beige and yellow undertones which suited much more skin tones. They also had foundations for dark skins when not much else was available from big companies.

AND NOW WHAT’S NEW ?

First of all there is the excellent Clinique Airbrush Concealer £18. It make dark circles under the eyes disappear. It’s a very light-weight formula which also works wonder on blemishes. It is available in just 4 shades, my favourite is 04 Neutral Fair.

Another popular product is the chubby stick moisturising lip colour £17. It’s got a great crayon application, a subtle sheen of colour and the balm is a real treat for the lips. There are 9 pretty colours to choose from and they mix well to create new shades.
